Fort Fetterman
An ordnance warehouse and restored officer’s quarters remain as the legacy of Fort Fetterman, the last remaining outpost near the Bozeman Trail. Today, interpretive exhibits and historic artifacts await visitors to the fort. Established in 1867, Fort Fetterman was used as a staging location for army expeditions during the Indian Wars. General George Crook led three marches out of Fort Fetterman, including the march that ended in the famous Battle of Rosebud. During this battle, General Crook’s army was defeated by a force of Cheyenne and Oglala Sioux, preventing them from joining Custer’s troops who would soon fight the Battle of Little Bighorn. Following the Indian Wars, the fort was no longer needed, and many of its buildings were sold and relocated. Walk among the foundations of the old fort, and follow the interpretive trail to a gazebo overlooking General Crook’s camp. Reflect on the history of Fort Fetterman and listen for the footsteps of Jim Bridger, Calamity Jane, and Wild Bill Hickok, who walked these grounds long ago.
